Video editing step by step process

Media Print Screens Step by Step

Music Video

Compared to the CD promo pack, we used completely different pictures. On the CD cover we focused more on the band. On the magazine Adverts we focused on different areas. We focused more on the actually meaning of the Album title rather than the band. On the first advert (left) we mentioned and stated the band name, the album name and the "Hit single". We did this because as our music video and song was "I Disappear" we decided to use a picture that helps relates back to the actual song and video rather than back to the artists. To do this, we made the main character fading to help emphasize and remind the audience the music video and song. We thought this idea of the magazine image was good as it contained for once a bright background and it gave off a friendly vibe as to say that the song and music video was good and that the band isn't all the time "dark, depressing and aggressive" like most rock/metal songs and music videos are. We mentioned a release date for the album along with a 5 star rating quoted from a real metal magazine called "Metal Hammer". The background we chose was a location that we used in the music video which again has brought us back to the video itself, we thought we would use this because we felt that the audience would be able to recognize the surroundings and not just have a random picture in a random location that does not work in any way with the music video or the music, we felt that this would be a good photo to have done for the front cover of a magazine.

The second advert (Right) we used was a very dark, aggressive and typical metal theme. We took a picture of Massimo’s back as he has a tattoo which we thought would look good as a type of "Emblem" for the band. The colors we used in this advert where black and grey to give off the metal vibe. We also decided that on this advert we kept it simple and to the point but at the same time, keep it a sort of mystery due to the simpleness of it. We included the text: "The end is near" as again it related to the album title "Lightning Fear". We wanted to emphasize the album in different ways and so we came up with the two ideas that are our magazine adverts. In both adverts we displayed in the bottom right corner the album front cover to again promote the album. The main reason why we came up with two ideas for adverts was because we created the first one (left) for normal music magazines as it was calm and friendly, and we created the second one (Right) for specific metal magazines such as Metal Hammer and Kerrang because of its dark colors and aggressive and morbid vibe. We didn’t want to use pictures of the band as we thought we had used them to many times on the CD and promo packs and decided to have a variation of photos throughout the magazine covers and pictures on the CD and promo packs.

CD Pack and Promo Pack

Top Right (Promo pack)
Bottom image (Handout)

(Top image) This is our finished CD Promo pack. we included front and back cover along side with an insert cover inside the CD. As you can see we also included the spine of the CD that we decided to add some artwork on. When looking at other CD albums from the rock/metal genre, we noticed that alot of them had artwork, pictures of the band but most importantly, some were quite complex and so we decided to have this for our own CD promo pack.

In the middle, the picture with the lighting is the front cover. Much like the back cover, we went with the dark background but, whilst studying different album covers, we noticed alot of rock/metal album covers were either artwork, or pictures of the band. For this reason, we decided to challenge the convention and use both for our front cover. We went with black stormy sky with lightning as it was in coherence with the album name which was "Lightning Fear". We liked the idea and chose it. The picture we chose was of only two band members. We chose this picture because the guitarist was looking back as to say he was looking behind him at the stormy, lightning filled sky and the drummer appears to be stunned and "Confused" with what is going on which again relates back to the album name. We thought as well that the picture itself was "Confusion" and gave the CD cover more of a "Metal" feel to it. In the bottom left corner we put a little sign that says "Parental advisory" as to say that the CD contained explicit lyrics which is very common with rock/metal This is the insert cover of my groups CD promo pack. We decided to go with a basic "Metal" background as we didn't want to use any images as we have already done that for the front and back cover and we wanted a variation of themes. We chose the idea of having the band members present with

Top (Front cover) Left (Back cover)

their names and job roles in the band to show who they were and what they contributed to the band and overall, to the CD. We kept to the dark background due to the "Metal" look and after researching CD albums, we found that our idea of having the band members present was done before but, most commonly on rock/metal CD albums. So we took the convention and went with this. We chose pictures of the band members playing to give it more of a realistic and proffesional manner. CD's.

Reason for choosing to do a music video.

There are several different reason why were have chosen to do a music video, firstly the group are great fans of Metallic . Mass knows the vocals to the song that we have chosen and knows how to play the guitar for the song, and Joe knows the drums to the song. This is one of the main reasons on why we choose to do a music video, a Metallic music video.

We knew we would find it easy to find suitable locations, and easy to get to, and we knew that we would make more progress ad complete this quicker than a film trailer.

We come up as a group with a final decision that we will do a music video, this is because we felt that it would take less effort and thought in to planning, unlike a music video a film trailer needs a plot, needs a script made, and would have to have a lot of thinking over it . So as a group we thought a music video would be more enjoyable and more fun filming a band playing their instruments while having a story scene to it. Also by doing a music video we felt as a group that we would be better off doing it, and the first day we come up with several good ideas, and will hopefully be in the video. We also felt to do a music video because we had the correct equipment to do a music video, mass had the guitars, Joe had the drum kit, I could provide loud music.

Myself and my group are very passionate about music, and listen to Metallic on a daily basis, making it easy to understand the song and understand how its played.

Re-shoot/Re-edit

During the process of producing our music video we filmed a lot of on the first time, and got about 30-40% of the garage scene complete. We went through the process of editing the garage scene and then realized we needed more film for the garage scene. So the after that weekend we filmed on the Monday. Once we did this re-shoot we went back and did the editing of the extra scene that we filmed. After this we where happy with the amount of film that we had for the garage scene.

Our next scene to complete was the woods scene, this is were Craig (myself) will be getting chased by the 4 Characters. This was the longest process of filming because we had to find what would be the best location, and this took time to get to. Once we had completed the filming in the woods, we realized yet again that we need to do some extra scene that we thought of after we did editing, so we went back to the woods to complete our extra filming. Once this was completed we went back and edited the new scenes in. This then made the woods filming complete.

Once we had all the film from the 2 locations we then looked at the film that we had, we then saw that some of the film was cut a little short, and cut a the wrong points. So we went back and sorted this editing problem out, and once we did this it was sorted.

Once we had our film from our 3rd location we realized that some of the other shot we had where now to long to fit in the 3rd locations filming. So we edited the 3rd locations filming and put it in to place, once this was done we cut the film that was to long and made it shorted. Once this was complete our music video was coming on well and we after this we just had to fix small parts of the video up.

Once we rendered the film we saw that some film was out of time, and did not match to what could be seen and hear, So we opened up the video in the editing software again, and loaded the video on the side, we then paused the video at the point to where it was out of time, then went to the same time on the video and then moved the video along, cut the film, then made it stretched it to make it the same time it was before. We then watched the video of again and saw everything was in place and in time, so we then did the final render, and then watched that and saw it was in time, we then uploaded this on to YouTube to place on to our blogs.

Mood boards

Here are I have selected several different images of bands from the rock and metal genre. As you can see in the pictures the majority of the band members have long hair, and pose/play in a aggressive or relaxed style. This is due to the fact this is rock/metal genre and the dark aggressive nature to it. The dress code.outfits that is most commonly seen and worn by these bands and artists are black, short sleeve shirt, ripped jeans and sometimes a chain with medallions on them. Some bands or artists wear clothing that express their feelings, as well as their music style, these are the main elements that me and my group will be looking at aiming for our video, to make it as "metal" as possible. Our band will be wearing Metal clothing, i.e. ripped jeans, rock/metal shirts to portray. our band as a real Metal band.
